Dear Ipolei and the family of the late Shigeyuki Kubouchi:
It is with deepest sadness I would like to express my heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Sakoda family.
While others know Shige as a gifted musician and singer, visionary businessman, caring son,
Husband, father and sibling, I will speak of our friendship of over 30 years. I could not ask for a friend that was more generous or loyal than Shige.
It started with a 3-foot tall Hello Kitty doll, Shige and Ipolei carried on the airplane to give to my daughter, Marissa. It is still in Marissa’s bedroom. 28 years later.
At my request, during an annual ceremony of the Osaka Minato Lions Club, Lion Shige, who was a proud member of the Waikiki 2000 Lions Club, and Ipolei/musicians and dancers, arrived late afternoon in Osaka to perform at the Osaka Minato Lions Club 50th Charter celebration. It was especially special and greatly appreciated by all in attendance because the Osaka Minato Lions Club and the Waikiki 2000 Lions Club were sister clubs. This was a special gift from the Waikiki 2000 Lions Club. Shige’s group played for about 2 hours and quietly returned to Nagoya that night.
Also, at my request, Shige and Ipolei and her halau performed at several annual McKinley High School Alumni fundraisers. Of course, Ipolei and her halau were a major hit. How many Japan based Halau would fly to Hawaii to help fundraise for a high school in Hawaii. The funds raised were used to support McKinley High School student organizations and clubs.
Whenever I visited Nagoya on a stopover to China, Shige would make sure I was well taken care of and we would dine at the best restaurants in Nagoya. Shige and I would spend countless hours talking about everything under the sun when we were together.
Shige and Ipolei would bring on their annual trips to Hawaii, special gifts for my late mother. Sally Sakoda, and for Colette and myself. And Shige, being such a generous person, always made sure these gifts which were the best.
During Shige’s recent stay in Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific, he would tell Ipolei to take to a special Yakiniku restaurant around the corner. Of course, in his mind he was referring to a restaurant in Nagoya. Even while he was rehabbing and in pain, he was always thinking of my welfare. It did not matter if it was in Hawaii or Japan.
This was Shige, he was selfless and caring. I was blessed to have met Shige and fortunate to be his friend. Shige was truly a special person. I will miss him dearly and will be reminded of our friendship when I look upon 3-foot-tall Hello Kitty in our daughter’s bedroom.
Shige your journey in life was monumental and will be remembered by the thousands of people you met and touched. I will always cherish our friendship. Thank you.
